Dedicated July 2, 1888

A life-size Irish wolfhound, representing faith and devotion, rests eternally at the base of this memorable monument. Many members of the 63rd, 69th and 88th New York Infantry Regiments honored by the monument had immigrated to the United States only a few years before the war to escape political repression and the potato famine in Ireland. Having fought valiantly at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, the unit had dwindled to 530 men by the time it reached Gettysburg, where nearly 200 additional members became casualties.

Above the monument of green granite is a Celtic cross, a traditional Irish symbol. Topping the cross is the trefoil symbol of the 2nd Army Corps, beneath which are numeric designations of the regiments, the state seal of New York, and the seal of Ireland. A bronze plaque on the right side of the base honors the 14th New York Independent Battery, an artillery unit at Gettysburg that had been part of the Irish Brigade before being detached.
