Dedicated November 13, 1994

Two soldiers, one Union and one Confederate, support one another as they limp away from the fighting on Culpís Hill. This monument symbolizes the long healing process that began when the battle ended. More than 3,000 Maryland soldiers fought on both sides at Gettysburg. A plaque on the base lists the six Union and five Confederate commands from Maryland that participated in the battle.

Lawrence M. Ludtke sculpted the 13-ft., 2,000-lb. statue. His portrait and figurative sculptures are represented in prominent institutions across the United States, including the United States Air Force Academy, Johns Hopkins Medical School, the White House and the Pentagon. The memorialís dedication took place 131 years, to the week, after Lincolnís Gettysburg address. A time capsule has been placed under the entrance walk.
