Only 17 covered bridges still stand in West Virginia, and Staats Mill, built in 1888, is among the few remaining in excellent condition. Most badly need repairs or total restoration. The 97-foot long-truss bridge originally cost $1,788.35, a small fraction of the funds necessary for the state to move and completely restore it in 1982.

The move came a year after all of West Virginia's covered bridges were listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The listing resulted from research done by Dr. Emory Kemp of West Virginia University, Morgantown.

Today Staats Mill Bridge spans a pond stream, where it provides a vivid link to the past for many young visitors at the Future Farmers of America-Future Homemakers of America State Camp southeast of Ripley. The bridge continues to be open to pedestrians.
